We took a family trip aka surf trip to Portugal. We stayed on the south west coast of Portugal in Sagres. There are plenty of surf spots and I do mean plenty! A lot of them are better on the west coast (better swell) but no matter what your ability you will be happy. Just 3 or 4 hours up the west coast is the world famous spot Nazare which produces 100 foot waves. I believe the biggest wave ridden is still from there.
I grew up surfing in South Africa so naturally I want my daughter Amelie to learn how to surf. I've tried a few times, but when dad is teaching, they just play up. So we paid for her to have a lesson. The instructors name is Angus, he's from Ireland, just here for a while helping out and getting some surf too... why the hell not!?
The surf camp is called Fun Ride surf camp and they have a base on Praia Do Amada, Aljezur. 37degrees9.999"N I 8degrees54.268"W. It's a 4/5 star beach with café, toilet and free parking facilities. It works well on a East & Northwest wind. Bottom has sand and rock. Swell is favourable in the South. It has lefts and rights, but I felt the rights tend to section off an close out, the lefts were better. Any way back to the lesson... They provided a board and wetsuit for Amelie who is only 5 bear in mind. The temperature of the water roughly 18 degrees, a little chilly for her, never the less she gave it a good go.
So here is a short video of Amelie's firs surf lesson, hope you enjoy.
