In mid July, we finally managed to make time to visit Aveiro Portugal from our full-time location in the Algarve. We caught the regional train from Vila Real de Santo Antonio to Faro. From there we boarded Express train Business Class service to Aveiro with a train change in Lisbon. Total trip time from Faro was about 5.5 hours.
Upon arriving in Aveiro, we caught a light lunch near the train station where they featured a famous local pastry called Ovos Moles de Aveiro. This delight could be found everywhere in town and consisted of a pastry wrap or cupcake type outer shell filled with a thick sweet egg filling. After lunch, we took a short taxi ride to our hotel for check-in and a quick unpack. We stayed at the Aveiro Palace Hotel which has a great location near everything especially the canals. We did some brief sightseeing and a then took a delightful Maliceiro boat tour on the canals. This is why the call Aveiro the Venice of Portugal. Then we walked the area’s businesses, markets and walkways.
For dinner, we went inland about 1 km to Espeto do Sul which offered a choice of Brazilian Rodizio style carne (meat) service cut at your table or an Asian menu with lots of oriental dishes and Sushi offerings. We had the Rodizio and loved it.

Next day, breakfast & Coffee was included in the hotel fee. We walked & filmed the town including a shopping mall, a cathedral, grocery stores, and the like. We walked the canal al next to Jardim do Rossio, we visited food markets and an indoor Praça do Mercado. We stopped for lunch at a street bistro and had Crepes & Tostas. For dinner, we found a Chines restaurant across the canal 100 meters from our hotel. It was called Hão Hua on Rua do Chibe das Galitos. All the food appeared to be freshly made to order and we were very pleased (unlike some of our other visits where seemingly wonderful eateries did not live up to their on-line reputations).
Next day, it was time to leave. We loved Aveiro and enjoyed our 2 day stay which we feel is sufficient to cover the sights.
