The Algarve, Portugal’s southernmost region, is known for its Mediterranean beaches and golf resorts. Whitewashed fishing villages on low cliffs overlooking sandy coves were transformed in the 1960s, and now its central coast between Lagos and Faro is lined with villas, hotels, bars and restaurants. The region's western Atlantic coast and rugged interior are less developed.
Faro is a municipality, southern most city and seat of the district of the same name, in the Algarve region of southern Portugal.
Albufeira is a coastal city in the southern Algarve region of Portugal. It’s a former fishing village that has become a major holiday destination, with sandy beaches and a busy nightlife strip. Local fishermen now use the modern marina, also a base for diving, dolphin-watching and boat trips. It's surrounded by candy-colored apartments, with a waterfront promenade.
Quarteira is a coastal Portuguese town in the Algarve region. Its long, sandy Quarteira Beach is backed by tall white buildings. The original fishing community remains and freshly caught fish is served at eateries along the palm-lined promenade of Avenida Infante de Sagres. Quarteira’s weekly market has stalls selling items like handbags and clothing. Golf courses dot the surrounding area.
Vilamoura is an unincorporated area on the southern coast of Portugal, comprising one of the largest single tourist complexes in Europe and with about 2,000 hectares of land. The nearest airport is in Faro.
